Scenario: A chemical plant flange carrying a 5 % NaOH / 10 % NaOCl bleach solution was sealed with C4400.
Result: After three months the gasket softened, blistered and leaked. Microscopy showed oxidation of the NBR matrix by hypochlorite. A PTFE-based gasket solved the problem.
Lesson: C4400 must not be used in strongly oxidising alkaline service without validation.
Scenario: A bottling plant used C4400 gaskets in a plate heat-exchanger heating purified water to 95 °C at 1.2 MPa.
Result: After one year no leakage or ageing was found; the material passed the food-safety audit.
Key: Water medium, moderate temperature—well inside C4400 capabilities.
Scenario: A cold-chain logistics firm tried C4400 valve gaskets in an ammonia refrigeration system at -40 °C.
Result: Initial sealing was good, but after winter operation slight weeping appeared. Disassembly showed the gasket had become brittle and lost recovery.
Lesson: For cryogenic service select low-temperature elastomers (FKM, VMQ) or PTFE; C4400 is unsuitable.
Scenario: A diesel-generator fuel system (60 °C, diesel similar to ASTM Fuel B) used C4400 gaskets.
Result: After six months no seepage was observed; post-service measurements showed 4.2 % mass increase and 1.8 % thickness increase—both acceptable.
Conclusion: C4400 exhibits good swell control in medium-oil environments and is fit for fuel sealing.
Scenario: A motor manufacturer fitted C4400 gaskets in 6.6 kV terminal boxes to provide dust- and moisture-proof sealing with basic electrical isolation.
Result: After two years no tracking or breakdown had occurred.
Key: The dielectric strength comfortably exceeds the service voltage.
